What are the signs that my pool might be leaking?

Common signs of a pool leak include:

  • Water level is dropping faster than normal (more than 1 inch per week after accounting for evaporation).
  • Wet or unusually soft areas around the pool deck.
  • Cracks in the pool walls, deck, or surrounding patio.
  • Visible water seepage or soggy spots near the pool’s plumbing lines or equipment.
  • Algae growth in unusual areas due to water imbalance.
What causes pool leaks?

Pool leaks can occur for several reasons, including:

  • Aging or cracked plumbing: Pipes, fittings, and valves can develop leaks over time.
  • Structural damage: Cracks in the pool shell, walls, or deck can let water escape.
  • Worn liners or seals: Vinyl liners, gaskets, and tile grout can deteriorate, causing leaks.
  • Equipment issues: Pumps, filters, heaters, and skimmers may leak if connections are loose or components fail.
  • Environmental factors: Shifting soil or extreme weather events can affect the structure of your pool and the surrounding areas.
Is a pool leak considered an emergency?

Technically, no. However, we strongly recommend addressing any potential pool leaks as soon as possible to avoid higher water bills, water contamination, broken equipment, and visible structural damage to your pool.

How long does it take to find a leak?

It depends on the leak’s location and severity. Professional pool leak detection typically involves dye tests, pressure testing, and, in some cases, specialized equipment to locate the source.

How long does it take to fix a leak in an in-ground pool?

Repair time depends on the type and location of the leak:

  • Plumbing leaks: Often repaired in 1–2 days.
  • Tile or liner leaks: Usually 1–3 days.
  • Structural leaks (cracks in the pool shell): Can take several days to a week, as the area may need to be drained, repaired, and cured properly before refilling.
Can I still use my pool if it has a leak?

Possibly. You may be able to use your pool if it has a small leak, but be careful, monitor your water levels closely, and avoid running the pump dry. For larger leaks, especially those affecting plumbing, structural walls, or the pool shell, we recommend limiting pool use until the leak is found and repaired. Continuing to use a leaking pool can worsen the damage and increase repair costs.
